Tactical Shell Matrix

Understanding which shells exist on which platforms is critical for threat modeling. Attackers choose shells based on target environment, and defenders must monitor all of them.

ash Alpine Linux, BusyBox, containers Container breakouts, minimal environments — default shell in Docker Alpine images, often the first shell an attacker gets in a compromised container
bash RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu (legacy default) Enterprise Linux infrastructure — the most common interactive shell on production servers, CI/CD runners, and jump boxes
dash Ubuntu, Debian (default /bin/sh) Cloud infrastructure — Ubuntu is the dominant cloud OS; dash handles all #!/bin/sh scripts, making it invisible to bash-only monitoring
sh Universal POSIX Cross-platform pivoting — guaranteed to exist on every Unix system; attackers use it for maximum portability across unknown environments
zsh macOS (default since Catalina) Developer endpoints — macOS developer machines are high-value targets for supply chain attacks; zsh is the default interactive shell
ksh / csh / tcsh AIX, Solaris, FreeBSD, legacy Unix Legacy infrastructure — mainframes, financial systems, telecom equipment running decades-old Unix variants

All shell binaries are monitored by eDR-Graph's process activity collection. Chain-aware rules can target specific shell invocations in context (e.g., ** > apache2 > bash triggers differently than sshd > bash).
